Once some time ago, my wife and I were coming back from a late dinner engagement. At around 11:45 pm I was negotiating a right turn on to a road, which would lead us to our home, when I came across a couple trying to cross the road, but were having a challenge as cars making turns were not stopping for the couple. My wife and I realized that the couple was blind, so we stopped the car, blocking the traffic behind us, and clearing the road for the couple to cross. I asked the couple where they were headed. They answered to a railway station, which was at least two kilometers from the crossing. So spontaneously I offered to drop them, to which they readily agreed and occupied the rear two seats of our car. My wife and I were startled as to how the couple inspite of being visually challenged were on the road on their own, this late in the night. I started conversing with the couple. During the initial conversation, we came to know that they were husband and wife. The husband`s name was Sunil and the wife`s name was Suman. Sunil lost his eye sight due to an injury to his head at the age of twelve, and his wife Suman lost her eye sight due to small pox at the age of eight. I asked them what were they doing this late in the night, and they replied that they had gone to visit a Sai Baba temple, as it was Thursday. I asked them how they were able to manage inspite of the visual challenge, to which Sunil answered marvelously; he said `If you have five holes in a pipe and you are blowing air through it, air will come out of all five. And if you block one hole, then the air will continue to flow from the other four, except the intensity of the flow from the remaining four holes will increase to make up for the fifth hole which is blocked.` Listening to his metaphorical answer, I felt a surge of energy, positive energy, for I could appreciate how Sunil and his wife Suman`s attitude made all the difference in their lives. Very often, we with all our five senses intact and functioning don`t experience life with vigor and excitement that Sunil and Suman do and the reason is that we have a negative attitude. We are not challenged because of physical handicaps, but more because of our mental handicaps. Meeting people such as Sunil and Suman, and sharing a few moments with them, I realized is an amazing way to realize that Attitude is everything. Are we making the most of the five senses that most of us have. Let us see more of the good that is around, listening to the good that is around, smell the good, taste the good and feel the good. This will come by constructing positive attitudes. I remember reading a quote often, when I was younger, `I felt sad for I had no shoes, till I came across a person who had no feet`. I thank Sunil and Suman for making me realize that happiness is a direct function of how we use what we have, and not how much we have. Let us strive to enjoy all what we have, and strive to create more for the well being of self and others.
